Carl Jung’s analytical psychology emerged in opposition to Freudian psychoanalysis. Jung saw great potential for psychotherapy in Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic method, but the idea of infantile sexuality underlying psychoanalytic theory was alien to him. Unlike Freud, Jung believed in the possibility of achieving inner harmony and directed his research toward finding it.
In the structure of personality, Jung distinguished the following elements (layers): Persona, Ego (I), Shadow, Anima (in men), Animus (in women), Self.
